And the rules that sound like fine print, doubling restrictions and missing surrender, cost real fractions of a point that stack. Notice what the 31% means in context: hitting a 12 is far safer than it feels, because only a ten-value card breaks it, and that is why the chart hits 12 against a dealer 2 or 3 rather than hiding. At the other end, the 62% on hard 16 is why surrender exists and why standing against a weak dealer card is so attractive: any total from 12 up can win without improving if the dealer busts first.

Read the bust column and the chart’s logic falls out. Upcards 4 through 6 bust roughly two hands in five, which is why your weak totals stand and your good totals double into them. Upcards 7 and up finish with a made hand roughly three times in four, which is why 14s and 15s cannot afford to wait against them. And the 7 column shows the sharpest cliff in the game: a dealer 7 lands on exactly 17 more than a third of the time, which any 18 beats, and that is precisely why the chart stands soft 18 against a 7 but hits it against a 9.

The ace row looks strangely tame, and the reason is the peek. These numbers are conditioned on the dealer checking for blackjack and not finding one, because when the hole card completes a natural the round ends before your decisions matter. Survive the peek and the monster under the bed is already gone: an ace that did not make blackjack busts one hand in six and lands its 21s from three or more cards. That conditioning is also why an ace still outperforms a ten for the dealer, and why the chart never relaxes against either.

The 6:5 Payout, Worked Out in Full

Blackjacks arrive about once every 21 hands, roughly 4.8 per 100. On a $10 table, each one pays $15 at 3:2 and $12 at 6:5, a $3 haircut per blackjack. Multiply it out: about $14 lost per 100 hands, on $1,000 of total action, which is where the published figure of 1.39 percentage points comes from. One line of fine print converts the best-priced game in the casino into one of the more expensive table games in the room.

The trap is presentation. 6:5 tables tend to advertise their friendliness: lower minimums, single-deck signage, a livelier feel. A single deck at 6:5 is a worse buy than eight decks at 3:2 by a wide margin, and no combination of otherwise good rules can pay back what the payout line takes. The habit that protects you costs five seconds: read the payout line first, and if it does not say 3:2, the rest of the rules card does not matter.
